Compressed air drives the XTRC5000 hammer, delivering percussive force to the button bit at the bottom of the hole.

As the bit fractures the formation, cuttings are drawn up through an inner tube within the drill string — the reverse of conventional flushing, where cuttings travel up the outside of the string.
